Ad libitum (ad lib.)

Ad libitum means translated "at free disposal". In horse feeding, this means that roughage such as hay is offered in an unlimited quantities 24 hours a day. This avoids long feeding breaks, which are a strain on the horse's stomach. However, there is a danger that horses that are light-fed will gain too much weight.
